Impotence is also known as erectile dysfunction and is the inability to achieve or sustain an erection for sexual activity to take place. It affects around one in 10 men and has a number of causes, both physical and psychological. There are a variety of treatment options available and for the majority of men these are successful.

It is important to remember that impotence is a condition and not a disease. It is caused when something in your body or your mind is not working right.

Impotence causes fall into three main categories: physical factors, psychological factors and lifestyle factors. Impotence causes a number of men to feel frustrated, inadequate, and anxious.

About 85 percent of ED has a physical cause. Only about 10 percent has a psychological cause. The remaining 5 percent has an “unknown” cause.

Psychological causes are often at the origin of an impotence: fears, anger, frustrations, and performance anguish, are the main reasons. The psychological factor is always important, because erectile dysfunction may severely affect self-esteem, provoke anxiousness and depression, and make the problem even worse, by an interaction of psychic factors with organic ones.

Men who are stressed out from work or who are having problems at home in a relationship, or with the finances, can have problems with impotence. Failure to perform sexually, only adds great fuel to the fire, so to speak, because anxiety and fear of failure, will only enhance the difficulty of getting a maintaining an erection. Men who are seriously depressed will have diminished or no sexual desire. Pointing out the problem to a man, especially during sex, will only make the problem much worse.

Another major cause of impotence is disease. It is estimated that over 70% of all serious impotence cases are the result of diabetes, kidney diseases, multiple sclerosis, endocrine disorders, vascular diseases and high blood pressure, as well as neurological diseases. It is estimated that between 50% and 60% of diabetic men are impotent.

Diabetes: This is one of the most common causes of impotence, because diabetes can cause changes in blood flow through narrowing of the arteries, or damage to nerve endings in the penis.

Hormonal Imbalance: Only a small percentage of cases of impotence are due to hormonal problems, such as insufficient testosterone.

Lifestyle factors are also leading impotence causes. Making positive changes to your lifestyle will not only improve your overall health, but can help you overcome problems with impotence.

More than 200 prescription and non-prescription medicines are known to affect erectile function in man. In fact, there are so many, and for so many conditions, that this should be one the leading causes of organic impotence. Some of these drugs promote impotence by acting on the central nervous system.
