Once it was “inability to perform”. Then came “impotence”, and now it’s called “erectile dysfunction” (ED). Since effective medicines have become available, the numbers of men complaining of difficulty in getting and maintaining an erection have skyrocketed; 30 million men in the USA alone, according to recent estimates.Along with many things, sex changes as we age. In healthy men the time it takes to get an erection and the time needed before the next erection get longer with the passing years. More direct stimulation of the penis is needed than in youth. By the time they are 40, as many as half all US men have difficulty getting an erection from time to time. While men have the advantage over women of being able to father children at any age, they may have difficulties with the sex act that become more frequent with age.
What Causes Male Sexual Problems?
Sexual dysfunction can be a result of a physical or psychological problem. Physical causes: Many physical and/or medical conditions can cause problems with sexual function. These conditions include diabetes, heart and vascular (blood vessel) disease, neurological disorders, hormonal imbalances, chronic diseases such as kidney or liver failure, and alcoholism and drug abuse. In addition, the side effects of certain medications, including some antidepressant drugs, can affect sexual desire and function. Psychological causes: These include work-related stress and anxiety, concern about sexual performance, marital or relationship problems, depression, feelings of guilt, and the effects of a past sexual trauma. Loss of libido (interest in sex),Reduced sensitivity in the penis, Difficulty getting/keeping an erection, Difficulty having orgasms, Difficulty with ejaculation (dry orgasm),Fatigue.
HIV/AIDS among Men Who Have Sex with Men:
In the United States, HIV infection and AIDS have had a tremendous effect on men who have sex with men (MSM). MSM accounted for 71% of all HIV infections among male adults and adolescents in 2005 (based on data from 33 states with long-term, confidential name-based HIV reporting), even though only about 5% to 7% of male adults and adolescents in the United States identify themselves as MSM.
The Heart of Sex Problems
Men with diabetes who also have trouble getting an erection may have heart disease and not realise it, say Italian doctors.A study is among the first to document what some doctors had predicted with the advent of drugs to treat erectile dysfunction that they would help flush out men with heart disease but no serious symptoms apart from erectile dysfunction. A recent study concludes that those among the diabetic men who face problem keeping an erection face twice the risk of developing heart diseases in comparison to the remaining. The Chinese University of Hong Kong underscores that the main reason behind both may be damaged blood vessel caused by increased sugar levels. It is suggested that men suffering from erectile dysfunction see a doctor.
Main Changes in Sexuality as Men Age:
Primarily due to a drop in testosterone, men will experience changes in their sexual function as they age. These changes include: Fewer sperm are produced, Erections take longer to occur , Erections may not be as hard , The ‘recovery time’ (time between erections) increases to 12 to 24 hours, The force of ejaculation decreases, Sexual desire decreases are due to emotional reasons or health problems.
