A sexually transmitted disease (STD) or venereal disease (VD), is an illness that has a significant probability of transmission between humans or animals by means of sexual contact, including vaginal intercourse, oral sex, and anal sex. Increasingly, the term sexually transmitted infection (STI) is used, as it has a broader range of meaning; a person may be infected, and may potentially infect others, without showing signs of disease. Some STIs can also be transmitted via use of an IV drug needle after its use by an infected person, as well as through childbirth or breastfeeding. Sexually transmitted infections have been well known for hundreds of years.
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are passed on through intimate sexual contact. STIs include chlamydia, syphilis, and gonorrhoea. They can be passed on during vaginal, anal and oral sexual intercourse, as well as through genital contact with an infected partner.
STDs, HIV & Safer Sex:
Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are caused by sexually transmitted infections. They are passed from one person to another during sexual or intimate contact. Sexually transmitted infections are very common. More than half of all of us will get one at some time in our lives. Sexually transmitted infections may or may not cause symptoms. Medically, an infection is called a disease only when it is causing symptoms. But it’s very common for people to use the terms “sexually transmitted diseases” or “STDs,” whether or not symptoms are present.
Chlamydia Infections:
Chlamydia is a common sexually transmitted disease caused by bacteria. You get it by having sex or sexual contact with someone who is infected. Both men and women can get it. Chlamydia usually doesn’t cause symptoms. If it does, you might notice a burning feeling when you urinate or abnormal discharge from your vagina or penis.
HIV and AIDS:
The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is the virus that causes Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). HIV attacks the immune system, resulting in a chronic, progressive illness and leaving infected people vulnerable to opportunistic infections and cancers. The median time from infection to AIDS diagnosis now exceeds 10 years. AIDS is fatal. There is no cure.
Genital HPV infection:
Genital HPV infection is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) that is caused by human papillomavirus (HPV).Human papillomavirus is the name of a group of viruses that includes more than 100 different strains or types. More than 30 of these viruses are sexually transmitted, and they can infect the genital area of men and women including the skin of the penis, vulva (area outside the vagina), or anus, and the linings of the vagina, cervix, or rectum. Most people who become infected with HPV will not have any symptoms and will clear the infection on their own.
Syphilis:
Syphilis is a sexually transmitted bacterial infection (STI) that initially causes genital ulcers (sores). If untreated, these ulcers can then lead to more serious symptoms of infection.
Treatment:
Most sexually transmitted diseases (STIs) can be treated using a single dose, or course, of antibiotics. The STIs which can be treated with antibiotics include: chlamydia, gonorrhoea (although some strains are now showing signs of resistance to antibiotics), syphilis, and urinary tract infections.
